Journey (OR-93)
Journey or OR-93, a former member of the White River Pack near Mt. Hood, has traveled farther south into the state than any known wild wolf in a century, a historic journey that highlights the importance of habitat connectivity and the dispersal ability of this iconic species.
As OR-93 walked, he passed lava beds in northern California. He climbed over snowy mountain passes in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. He traveled along the edge of Yosemite National Park, walked across farmlands and crossed three dangerous California freeways. While OR-93 traveled hundreds of miles, his journey ended on the I-5 where he was struck by a vehicle.
While California was once a wolf territory, the last documented gray wolf so far south in the state was captured in San Bernardino County in 1922. Wolves were hunted, trapped, and killed so efficiently by European settlers that they nearly went extinct.
Since this wolf's return to California, there are now 2 smaller Gray Wolf packs living in the Norther Sierra Navada near Yosemite National Park.
